Bloggers Quilt Festival Fall 2013

Hello everyone

I only discovered yesterday that 2 entries are allowed into the Bloggers Quilt Festival, the twice yearly quiltfest kindly organised by Amy from Amy's Creative Side

I have decided my second entry will be my Hummingbirds piece in the Wall Hanging quilt category.

It measures 27" x 35" and I've only finished it in the last few weeks.   The appliqued hummingbirds were supposed to go in the border of another quilt I was making but they didn't look right.  This is how this piece came to be.

I appliqued the birds, flowers and leaves using bondaweb then with the work in a slat frame, I hand embroidered over the top.   Took quite a few weeks but was worth it.

I made some crumby/string blocks for the border then it was ready to quilt.

This is the finished result:

I hope you can find the time to pop over and look at all the quilts.  There are really some amazing entries - very inspiring.
Thanks for stopping by,
Rhianon.

Hummingbird #2

Hello quilty friends.

Last week I got quite a bit of hand embroidery done on the hummingbirds wall hanging and bird #2 is now finished. Here is how it's looking now:

This one has more blues and purples .

I also added a little detail to the flower.

I now only have the third bird to embroider.  I've finished all the flowers so hopefully next weekend I can start to quilt this.  Can't wait.
Before I go, I'd like to thank everyone who left me a comment on my last post.   Life has been so hectic around here ( kids going back to school, work and orthodontic appointments) that I did not get a chance to reply to you all.  Sorry about that - I always appreciate your comments.
I'll be back soon with some free motion quilting to show you.
Have a good weekend!
Rhianon.

Grandmother's Fan Quilt / Hummingbird Wall Hanging

Hello,
A few posts back, I wrote about how I wanted to make a Grandmother's fan quilt.

This was me playing with layouts....and I decided to go with this one:

I added a couple of  wide plain borders with the intention of doing appliqued hummingbirds and flowers all around but it just didn't look right.

So, I thought how about some Dresdens around the border?

I spent 2 days making a stack and I didn't like how they looked either, So I have decided to leave the borders plain and will instead quilt my hummingbirds and flowers into the borders.

Of course I had spent time drawing out my hummingbirds design and rather than not use them, I started a new wall hanging.

I appliqued my design and loaded it onto my hand sewing frame.  Some nice embroidery will bring out the details.

I will make a pieced border to frame this then FMQ it.  Really enjoying the hand embroidery bit and I've managed to get two projects out of one idea.
I'll be a while on this one as there are two more hummingbirds to embroider.

See you all next time.
Rhianon.
