Customer Quilting

Hello there

Its been a while since I last posted, Christmas has been and gone and I hope you all had a lovely time.
I was very busy with customer quilts in the run up to December.

 I loved this colourful quilt made by Frances who requested an allover design.

 This one was also made by Frances and gave me free reign to do as I wished.

 I kept it simple with some feathers in the center blocks.

This next one was a full custom job and this is all I can show you out of respect for the customers privacy.

 A beautiful memory quilt......

I've also been busy working on Bonnie Hunter's annual mystery quilt. Another cracker but more about that in my next post.

Allietare Mystery Quilt - the quilting

One of the highlights of my year is to make Bonnie Hunter's mystery quilt. Last years was beautiful.
It was called Allietare and inspired by Bonnie's trip to Italy.

I did not make mine full size and you can see the post I did here.
Finally I got it loaded onto my frame and started quilting it.  I'm using one layer of Hobbs 80/20 and Glide threads.
This is my progress so far....

I'll be back later in the week when I get this beauty finished.

Melons Quilt

its been a while since I blogged but I always like to have a finished quilt to show.
this is my latest one. It was a happy mistake.  I actually wanted to make an orange peel quilt but couldn't find the tool.
Instead I bought an uneven nine patch ruler, thinking it would do.  When it arrived, it was far too big for an orange peel block.  Never mind, thought I'd play with my new ruler anyway!

 I used a charm roll called Love Glows from Crafts and Quilts.  Isn't it lovely fabric ?

These blocks measure 10.5".  Once they are made, I used the ruler to cut these shapes.

 Using the nine patch ruler again, I cut melons in cream to join the blocks together.
Then it was onto the frame for quilting.

 I used one layer of Soft and Bright and machine quilting thread from Empress Mills.

 So far, so good.......

 The only marking for quilting I did for the melons was a dot in the middle.  Its all freehand.

 This is my machine, a Janome 1600P.  I don't have a stitch regulator.  If you are wondering what the silver lever is by the handle, its a modification my husband did for me.  I really didn't like the gizmo that came with the set up, a start/ stop button and a dial for setting speed so now I have this.  My husband's a gem!

 I'm busy working away on a new quilt so will have more to show soon.

Pinwheels Baby Quilt

I have been commissioned to make 2 baby quilts so I got to work on them this week.
For the first one I decided to go with the traditional pinwheel block.

Sorry I forgot to take photos of it before quilting which I usually like to do. The quilt measures 32" x 36" and my pinwheel blocks finished at 6.5".   I used a thick 6oz polyester wadding.  It is light weight but gives a nice puffiness to the less densely quilted areas.

I decided to work little feathers in the plain cream parts and just an echo line on the feature fabric.  It gives a very textured look.

Luckily the sun came out one morning and I was able to get these shots.  Natural light is so much better.

This is the back of the quilt.

All I have to do is bind this now and its finished.  I've already started on quilt #2.  I am doing friendship star blocks for that one.  Got a good start on the top yesterday but I'll show you more in my next post.
