Crochet Butterfly

I have been doing quite a bit of crochet lately and I thought it would be fun to merge quilting and crochet together.

I found this butterfly as a free pattern on MyPicot.  It was too big for the project I had in mind so decided to make a quilted setting for it to go on.

I appliqued some leaves and quilted on my Q'nique using 2 layers of Hobbs 80/20 but did not really think two layers added much.

 I used a fine no8 crochet cotton and a 1mm hook to make the flower blossom and a slightly thicker cotton to crochet the branches. An embroidered French knot in the center finishes the flowers.

 The finished piece is quite small, measuring just over 12" square.

I quite like it and will probably hang it in my workroom somewhere.

Now onto something bigger.......

Geisha Panel

This is a printed panel I finished quilting recently. It is called Tea House by Benartex.

I saw it online and thought it would make a nice gift for my brother's birthday. He likes all things oriental.

I used one layer of Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 and quilted it on my Q'nique.

Turned out pretty nice and my brother loved it.

Allietare Mystery Quilt.

Here is the completion of Allietare, the mystery quilt from Bonnie Hunter.
It is one of my most favourites of Bonnie's mysteries so far. ( Loved Celtic Solstice)

Without further ado here are the remaining clues of the quilt........

Putting the blocks together.  

I found a very nice fabric for the outer border in my stash. it has dragonflies on it and has a stained glass look to it and most importantly, the colours were perfect for my quilt.

I made half the amount of units and this gave me a 4 x 4 star layout measuring 72" square.
I only had to make 1 extra star block which took no time and I also have one of the other blocks left over to make into a matching cushion.
This is as far as I have got.  It is ready to go on my frame for quilting.
I plan to make another of these quilts because I love the pattern so much.

Allietare, Mystery Quilt 2015

Christmas is fast approaching and that means it's time for Bonnie Hunter's annual mystery quilt.
This will be my fifth mystery quilt of Bonnie's I have done.
This year it is called Allietare and you can find all the information here if you want to join in.
For those of you who follow my blog you will know I adore the quilting process but I love piecing too and doing a Bonnie quilt always helps me become better at this, not to mention that you get a beautiful quilt at the end of it.

As always I like to use whatever is in my stash so these are the colours I have chosen.
I've not strayed too far from Bonnie's choices swapping the golds for green and the reds have a more terracotta feel to them.

Normally I would have used my easy angle ruler to make the HSTs but this time I decided to use a method I have not tried before .  The magic 8.

The tutorial I used gave an update suggesting adding an extra 1/4" to the starting square.  I did this and look at all the excess I had to trim off.  I guess my piecing is more accurate than I think.  what a waste!

Here is my little pile of HSTs all ready to go.  I am making half the amount suggested by Bonnie.
The full sized finished quilt will be too big to fit on my frame.

I'm just going to end my post with something else Bonnie -related.  This my tumbler quilt which was the leader and ender challenge for 2015.
I started in July and finished it just before Allietare started. My tumblers finish at 2" in the quilt.

I designed the tumbler flower blocks to frame the main piece.  They are made from appliqued 1 1/2" tumblers with a hexagon in the middle.

Love my tumbler quilt and thank you to Bonnie for another great challenge.
