I love Dresden plate quilts and when I saw this version I just had to make one.
The block is designed by the Missouri Star Quilt Company and you can find the video tutorial here
My blocks finished at a huge 21.5" and I decided to do a 3 x 4 layout. I used my tall triangles ruler to make the spikey border.........
......... it seemed to take a long time to make this border but I really like it so it was worth the effort.
In the negative space between the big Dresdens I made smaller plates in subtle colours. I wanted them to blend into the background.
This quilt took a lot of fabric to make and the top was quite heavy before quilting, despite me cutting away the excess fabric from behind the plates. I used one layer of Hobbs 80/20 wadding.
This is it coming off the frame.
Finished but not bound.
It was all freehand quilted by myself with my Q'nique.
Small Dresden
I have entered this quilt into the Scottish Quilt Championships which is this weekend in Edinburgh.
Woo hoo that means I have a quilt show to go to and that can only mean lots of quilty shopping!!! Can't wait. Hopefully I will also be able to get a photo of the full quilt hanging up.
Thanks for visiting today. I'll be back soon with a post from the quilt show.
Rhianon. :)
I love seeing every quilty detail, so I'm glad you showed the back, too. Best of luck in the show, and enjoy your shopping!

ReplyDeleteI'm from Quebec, Canada and were visiting at Edimburg last week.
I am totally in love with this quilt -- everything from the colour choices to the exquisite quilting!!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your blog -- I ALWAYS look forward to seeing what you are up to!
Breathtaking! Like Carole, I love seeing every quilting detail, and I studied each picture! The fabrics are fabulous too. Lots of inspiration here and always SUCH beautiful quilting. Thank you for sharing your quilts, your journey with your Q'nique and best of luck in the show! (I'm from southwestern Ontario in Canada, seems to be a few Canucks in the comments here!)
ReplyDeleteWow, such a beautiful quilt - I loved it before the quilting and adore it after - good luck at the show, I bet your quilt will be admired by all who see it :-)
ReplyDeleteooo! A quilt show in Edinburgh :D Wow, would I love that - extra specially with one of your quilts in it. I love the low contrast of the small dresdens in this mix. It's giving me more confidence with the set of fabrics I'm currently cutting out. I was worried that the red will pop too much, but seeing your very similar mix, I can tell it will be nice. A different kit design, though - not these lovely Dresdens.
ReplyDeleteWow! What an amazing quilt! The shapes of the spiky border with the dresdons makes me think 'sunflowers' even though the colours don't fit that flower. I hope the quilt is hung so people can see the back as well as the front. Surely you must receive a rosette for such an amazing quilt? Have a great time at the exhibition.
