Lattice Smocking

Hi there,

I had a great start to the week - I got to take my first ever class, ie , me being the teacher.
It came about because Irene, who runs our quilt group was unable to make it and rather than cancelling, she asked me to step into her shoes.

I decided to teach the ladies how to do this:

It is called lattice smocking and I learned to do it 27 years ago at the RSN.
After searching around on the web, I've also discovered it is called Canadian smocking.

It gives a highly tectural effect and looks good on cushions and bags.

There are a few different patterns...
this one is a leaf pattern.

It is hand stitched from the back of the fabric, using a grid to pull the fabric and make the pattern.

I found an excellent blog by a lady called Vani.  She has lots to read and a video tutorial.  You can find her here.  All the links are down the right hand side of her blog.
You could also look for lattice smocking on You Tube./

This one is a flower pattern and is different because it is worked from the front of the fabric.
I quite like the idea of incorporating this into a quilt somehow - I think it could look really good.

I have been working on a quilt this week but I'll show you that in my next post.
Lots and lots of feathers!!!

See you then
Rhianon.

  3. Thank you so much for posting this tutorial. I've looked at smocking before but haven't tried it. This looks easy enough, I think I'll give it a whirl while watching tv some evening!

BTW, when stitching Canadian smocking, do you zig-zag?

    1. You're very welcome. Yes, the stitches go in a zig-zag on the back - for some of the patterns anyway.
