Friday rolls around again and this week I have finished a child's quilt - for a little girl.
I designed it myself, starting with some star blocks and colourful sashing. I kept the border a simple checkerboard as I wanted to scatter appliqued hearts over it. It's the first time I've ever done machine applique and was pleased with how it turned out.
This photo was taken with the flash on. I much prefer no flash but the weather has been wet, dull and foggy and absolutley no good for trying to get good photos!
This is my set up for quilting - not too bad at all becasue it is quite a small quilt. It measures 44" x 55".
When I first started quilting the pebbles, I thought I had made a huge mistake but I was too far committed (lazy) to unpick it. I kept going and now I'm pretty pleased with the result.
For the outer border, I quilted a swirly circles type pattern that I made up as I went along. Turned out great - I love the textures on this quilt.
For the hearts, I just outlined them.
I used a nice bright poly/cotton for the back. I've been having a discussion with some quilty friends about using poly/cotton for quilt backs. Is it a good thing or not ?? If you have an opinion please share.
I've yet to wash this quilt but I'm sure it will be ok on a cool/delicate wash. I'll let you know how it turns out!
I'm linking up with M R from Quilt Matters , who is hosting this weeks TGIFF. Pop over and check out the Friday finishes.
I'll be back soon with another post. See you all next time.
Have a great weekend.
Rhianon.
Yes - a really lovely Quilt Rhianon. I love the quilting, especially the pebbles. Looks great. I'll have to try it. You are such an inspiration.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful little quilt..and I adore your quilting
ReplyDeleteOh wow !! BEAUTIFUL ! Your quilting is gorgeous and really adds to the beauty of the quilt ! ( I have just started fmq practice and it's horrible !!! Now you have inspired me to stick to practice since you did this on your regular machine !)
ReplyDeleteit looks great...may just "pinch! the idea for quilted pebbles xx
ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful quilt. The quilting is wonderful and really makes the quilt shine.
ReplyDeleteI love your work and descriptions, Thank you <3
ReplyDeleteVery pretty quilt! Great machine quilting! I love pebbles! I don't like mixing fabrics in my quilts, I only use 100% cotton for the front and back of quilts. I also use cotton thread.
ReplyDeleteWow your quilt really pops, the quilt design and quilting look really professional.
ReplyDeleteI always use Ikea cotton sheets for my backings, it works out cheaper than quilting fabrics and they are lovely and soft.
Oh, this is so pretty! I think the decision about "allowance" of non-natural fibers on quilts (fronts or backs) is a personal decision that can differ on several factors, such as is it a quilt that is intended for super snuggliness (minky's a poly), is it meant to be an heirloom for generations or a show quilt, do you just absolutely *love* that blended fabric? ;D I don't think it matters one whit on quilts that are intended for hard, frequent use, like everyday baby quilts and bedspreads for children. For show quilts and forever and ever quilts, I'd personally stick with all-natural fibers.
ReplyDeleteWow, you are an absolutely beautiful quilter! I didn't realize you did all your quilting on a standard sewing machine. I just assumed you had a long arm! Wow - I'm even more impressed now!! :)
ReplyDeleteThat is absolutely gorgeous; I love your quilting!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt! Your quilting is just amazing!
ReplyDeleteSo pretty - and I love your quilting!
ReplyDeleteThe texture of the quilting is beautiful, Rhianon! I love how you added the appliquéd hearts in an asymmetrical way. As for poly/cotton vs. cotton, I saw do what you want! If you are doing a mix though, probably better to prewash everything so that there isn't a differing amount of shrinkage. :)
ReplyDeleteAnd, hey! I had to choose you for my Liebster Award list. :) http://whatahootquilts.blogspot.com/2012/02/liebsters.html
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt, superb quilting. Well done.
ReplyDeleteWow, your quilting really inspires me to not give up on free motion quilting with my machine!
ReplyDeleteLOVE all the quilting that you did!! For special quilts or heirloom, I'd stick with all cotton. For kiddie's cuddle quilts I've used poly/cotton mix quite happily. Never had a problem with the wear or the stitching :)
ReplyDeleteIt's absolutely gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI have no idea how to applique, let alone how you made it so puffy and pretty.
